The LXmini was
designed to render sound recordings with clarity, neutrality and with
detailed, 3D-like imaging, when properly set up. The speakers will
reveal what is in a recording, but never add unpleasantness. You will
get lost in the music and have a big smile on your face, guaranteed!
The LXmini is a 2-way loudspeaker, which can
be built DIY from a Kit for around $800, including miniDSP 2x4HD equalizer/crossover.
Additionally, 4 power
amplifiers in the 50 W to 200 W range are needed. The speaker's frequency range extends from 45 Hz to 20 kHz.
The horizontal and vertical off-axis frequency response, which is heard via the
room, is spectrally neutral. Thus, listening off-axis merely changes the viewing
angle to the phantom acoustic scene rendered by the seemingly absent
loudspeakers.
Physics limits the maximum sound level
output from a 5 inch woofer below 150 Hz. A gradual, 12 dB/octave low end
roll-off provides satisfactory bass extension below 50 Hz. For LXmini+2 I added
separate subwoofers for bass extension to 25 Hz. If you plan to upgrade in the
future from LXmini to LXmini+2, then use the miniDSP 4x10HD for LXmini.

The LXmini+2 is a 3-way loudspeaker,
which can
be built DIY from a Kit for around $1800, including a miniDSP 4x10HD equalizer/crossover.
Additionally, 6 power
amplifiers in the 50 W to 200 W range are needed. The speaker's frequency range extends from
25 Hz to 20 kHz. The horizontal and vertical off-axis frequency response, which
is heard via the room, is spectrally neutral. Thus, listening off-axis merely
changes the viewing angle to the phantom acoustic scene rendered by the
seemingly absent loudspeakers.
With an LR2 crossover at a low 60 Hz the two subwoofers can be placed next to or
against the side
walls of a room. Path length
differences to the listener can be compensated for in the DSP unit. Dipole
woofers can also be angled to reduce room mode excitation and thus preserve
articulation in bass sounds.
The LXmini+2 performs sonically like the
LX521.4 and comes close to the full-range dipole's ultimate refinement of sound
presentation, though at 10 dB reduced volume levels in the
bass.
(An upgrade from LXmini to LXmini+2 requires addition of two LXsub2 subwoofers,
a stereo power amplifier (2x 50 W min), and a miniDSP 4x10HD)

The LXstudio was
designed to render sound recordings with clarity, neutrality and with
detailed, 3D-like imaging, when properly set up. The speakers will

The LXstudio is 3-way loudspeaker that combines the
LXmini with two LXsub4 dipole subwoofers, which have 10 dB higher output capability
than can be obtained from the LXmini+2 configuration. A 10 dB increase is
perceptually significant due to the ear's very nonlinear hearing
sensitivity to the lowest frequencies. With an LR2 crossover at a low 60 Hz the woofers can be placed against the side
walls of a room and the LXmini used as near-field monitors. Path length
differences to the listener can be compensated for in the DSP unit. Dipole
woofers have the advantage of less room mode excitation, which matters even in a
highly damped recording/mixing studio.

The LX521.4
exemplifies the best of what I have observed and learned in 50 years of
experimentation about rendering stereo recordings in domestic living
spaces. I love music. Life's circumstances prevented me from learning to
play an instrument, but I make up for it by enjoying the creations of
great composers and the art of musicians. I have designed speakers first
of all for myself and free of commercial pressures. With the LX521.4 I
have arrived at a level of performance, which makes me search no
further. Instead I gratefully enjoy what I can hear. I excuse the
recording/mixing engineer for his or her imprint and marginal acoustic
scene capture, as long as the music still comes through. As hired
engineers they work within a set of imposed limitations, one of which is
the typical monitor loudspeaker.
The LX521.4 is a 4-way loudspeaker, designed as
full-range dipole, for flat on-axis and off-axis response in the horizontal
plane and frontal hemisphere. The speakers need breathing room of at least 1
m to the nearest large reflecting surfaces and a room with a minimum floor size
of 25 sqm.
The LX521.4 can
be built DIY from a Kit for around $3300, including a miniDSP 4x10HD equalizer/crossover.
Additionally, the speaker requires between 8 to10 power amplifiers of 50
W to 200 W.
